The Void Monitor, developed by Custom Mining Solutions, stands as a groundbreaking safety monitoring device. Mounted on the walls of underground tunnels near open voids, the Void Monitor utilises a specially designed frame and winch system to extend a LiDAR scanner into the an open void. This scanner continuously monitors the cliff face, detecting any changes or ground failures within its field of view.
One of the key features of the Void Monitor is its real-time alert system, which promptly notifies personnel and the mine control tower of any detected anomalies. This instantaneous communication enables swift response measures, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring the safety of workers operating near open voids.
"I have trialled the VM in an open pit mine overhanging an open edge with great results and looking to trial it at an underground mine this year," says Jake Hartwig, Director of Custom Mining Solutions. "Mines are getting deeper, and ground pressures are increasing dramatically. The Void Monitor provides a 24/7 pair of eyes inside areas which you cannot normally see, significantly improving safety standards in the mining industry."
Jake's commitment to safety led to the successful installation of the Void Monitor at the Kanmantoo mine in SA, with the trial initiated by site manager Jolyon Jardine. Jolyon, a seasoned safety representative in the mining industry, recognised the potential of the Void Monitor in enhancing safety protocols and collaborated with Custom Mining Solutions to conduct the trial.
