As the world continues to combat carbon emissions from transportation and electricity generation, battery usage is on the rise. However, with increased battery use comes an increase in waste at end-of-life. Magellan Power has developed an innovative solution to address the whole-of-life cycle management of lithium-ion batteries used by the industry: the Battery Eco System - 4R. This new system involves four stages: Repair, Refurbish, Repurpose, and Recycle.
The Battery Eco System - 4R aims to create new supply chains for spent batteries, a significantly increasing waste product from the electrification of mining vehicles. This approach will enhance battery stewardship, delivering industry with an avenue to responsibly manage batteries from design through to end-of-life. The project is an exciting one for Magellan Power as it represents an opportunity to further deepen their market reach. Already an industry leader in the Australian battery pack assembly sector, this project will allow Magellan to significantly expand their existing work in the areas of integrated service, repair, refurbishment, and recycling. In essence, this will result in Magellan being the only player in Australia operating significantly across multiple areas of the battery value chain and being able to offer a genuinely circular solution to this growing waste issue.
Magellan Power is focused on a B2B model, looking to leverage existing relationships with key mining companies to access large volumes of batteries for repair, refurbishment, repurposing, and recycling. They have identified optimal mine sites within three hours’ drive of Newman and have begun relationship mapping their connections with decision-makers and influences on each of these sites. This web of connections will underpin their targeted approach to their customer base, with their business development team working to raise awareness and interest through regional and metropolitan industry events, networking with key customer representatives, and active engagement on LinkedIn.
Their product range has an extensive market for batteries and battery racks manufactured from their Rockingham Hub. In addition to the mining sector, they expect strong demand from utilities, oil and gas, transport, defence, and renewable energy sectors. Magellan Power's team will lean on their 30+ year relationship with these sectors, along with their strong presence on LinkedIn as influencers and trusted authorities. Their team boasts over 30,000 quality LinkedIn connections, having invested significant effort in building their network with key decision-makers.
Magellan Power is committed to the 4R approach and to becoming battery stewards, looking after the batteries on-site, ensuring the battery health and performance until end-of-life. They will then discharge the spent batteries prior to transport and safely transport them to their Rockingham facility, where the batteries can be sent on to recycling partners or repurposed for further use (if cells are still healthy).
This new solution is not just about responsible battery stewardship but also resource recovery of critical minerals used in lithium-ion batteries (LIB). With the increasing use of batteries, there is a concurrent issue of the need for resource recovery of these critical minerals.
